USA’s Josh Toth and Dante Oliveira dip a toe into FIM EnduroGP waters

Round four of the Paulo Duarte FIM EnduroGP World Championship in Wales welcomed the addition of Josh Toth and Dante Oliveira, two of the United States’ top offroad riders.

For Toth, the Forsiteservices GP of Wales was a return visit, having raced there in 2024, while for Oliveira, it was his first time competing in EnduroGP.

Both riders are contesting the 2025 6DAYS® FIM Enduro of Nations in Italy next week as members of the United States’ World Trophy team. With a break in their racing schedules, round four offered the perfect opportunity for the pair to dip a toe into EnduroGP action and fine-tune their skills in timecard enduro.

Unaccustomed to the intensity of special test racing, Toth fared best of the duo with a 19-21 scorecard in EnduroGP, along with a pair of top-10 finishes in Enduro1. Oliveira was 28th on day one before improving to 26th on day two in EnduroGP. Similar to Toth, he was top 10 in his category, this time in Enduro2.

With some time to digest their weekend, we caught up with the pair to see how things went in Wales and how it compares to racing back home.

“My results have been up and down and not quite what I was hoping for,” admits Toth. “But ultimately, it’s been good practice for the 6DAYS® coming up. I enjoyed the extreme test the most. It definitely gets the heart pumping and you really have to keep your focus. It’s a test that rewards bike skill for sure.”

As the reigning AMA National Enduro Champion, the EnduroGP format of timecard and special test racing is more familiar to Josh than Dante, but even still, he feels they have their set differences.

“At home, I mostly race National Enduros and GNCC,” explains Josh. “With National Enduro we have six stages, like special tests, but we race them blind and don’t pre-walk them. So really, it’s about going as fast as you can see on the bike.

“With GNCC, it’s a three-hour cross-country race, so it’s a different format again. Really, it was at the 6DAYS® in November when I last jumped into this type of special test racing.”

Living in California, Dante is more at home in hare scrambles and desert racing, having won both WORCS and West Hare Scrambles championships multiple times. For his first time in EnduroGP, it was the intensity of racing a special test that he found was the hardest thing to adapt to.

“I knew coming here that the top guys were good, but it’s their aggression right off the bat that grabs you the most,” Dante considers.

“It’s a case of once you break that timing beam, you have to be on it and I think I lacked that here quite a bit. I wasn’t cruising in the test, but I wasn’t on it enough. You have got to be charging all of the time, you have got to be confident and you have got to commit.

“I have raced the 6DAYS® before, but those special tests tend to be a bit more open and flowing. The layout in Wales was a little bit more on the tighter side.

“The enduro test had my number quite a bit and was a challenge, however, I did enjoy the extreme test. It’s been great to experience a different style of racing and to do my first ever EnduroGP. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity and support to come over here and do it.”

While his results may not have hit the mark he hoped for, Josh would like to do more EnduroGP racing, and someday see it cross the pond to the United States.

“I think in the USA we have an interest for EnduroGP and this format,” says Josh. “I feel it’s the future for enduro in the USA. [As spectators], you can see so much racing, and as competitors, we get to ride long days. I love it.”

With RIEJU Factory Team’s Rachel Gutish currently the only rider from the United States racing full-time in EnduroGP, let’s hope more riders like Toth and Oliveira can become regular faces in the championship in the near future.
